About The Church Atlas
The Church Atlas is an independent, community-built map documenting the world's church heritage: architecture, history and photographs. Anyone can explore it for free, in their own language, and anyone can help improve it.
What you can do
- Browse churches on a map and filter them by denomination: Catholic, Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, Protestant, Anglican and others.
- Read descriptions in your own language. Texts are translated automatically, and where a Wikipedia article exists in your language it is shown too.
- See photographs shared by visitors and open them full screen.
How to contribute
- Open the map and tap a church.
- Scroll down in the church panel, add a photo (taken or chosen from your phone) and/or a short comment, and type your name.
- A moderator reviews every contribution before it appears. Please send only photos that you took yourself or that you have the right to share.
Missing a church, or found a mistake?
Leave a comment on the closest church describing what is missing or wrong, and the moderator will look into it.
Where the information comes from
- Church locations and names: © OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
- Descriptions and photos: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA and other free licences, credited where shown), Wikidata (CC0), and photographs from our visitors.
- Automatic translations are produced by a free translation service and can contain mistakes. You can always switch back to the original text.
- Map tiles: OpenStreetMap. Satellite imagery: Esri.
Privacy and your data
- We do not set cookies and we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking (last updated: 25 October 2026).
- We keep simple, anonymous visit counts: which kind of page was opened (and which church), the interface language, the country (worked out from the connection by our hosting provider; your IP address is not stored), the website that referred you, and the type of device. No cookies or personal identifiers are used, and nothing is counted if your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal.
- Your language choice and some cached lookups (translations, place names, photo addresses) are kept in your own browser and are not sent to us.
- If you send a photo or a comment, we store your name, text and photo (and the profile link, if you add one), and show them with your name once approved. You can ask us to remove them at any time.
- If you send a request as a church representative, we store your name, email and message only to review it and reply to you; we do not show them publicly, and we delete them on request.
- Like on any website, the services we load (map tiles, fonts, code libraries, Wikipedia, the translation service) can see your IP address when your browser contacts them. The site is hosted on Vercel and uses Supabase for its database and photo storage.
- You can ask us to correct or remove anything you sent (your name, text or photo) by writing to info@thechurchatlas.com.
