The Chapelle expiatoire is a Roman Catholic memorial chapel in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France. Built between 1816 and 1826 on the initiative of Louis XVIII and Marie Thérèse of France, it stands on the former site of the Madeleine Cemetery, where King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were temporarily buried following their executions in the present Place de la Concorde in 1793 during the French Revolution. The chapel was erected as an act of expiation and commemoration for the deaths of the French royal couple.
